End of Life Support
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy
Here at Amy’s Mind Lab, we create space to address the needs of those facing illness, facing the need for medical caregivers, and facing a decrease in independence. Psychedelic and/or Ketamine-assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) can offer significant benefits for folks nearing their end of life, and also for the family members and loved ones alongside them.
KAP FOR CAREGIVERS
Caregivers work with love, delivering the best possible care as they prepare to say goodbye. And just as flight attendants instruct passengers to put their own oxygen masks on before assisting others, our goal is to offer that breath of air to the family and friends at the bedside.
Dealing with physical illness can be an exhausting and terrifying time, full of logistical concerns like doctor visits and medication schedules; it creates a need for the space to take a breath, to take a break, to rest. Ketamine-assisted therapy can help with stress relief, mood regulation, and easing symptoms of anxiety and depression. [See more about Ketamine-Assisted Therapy]
KAP for End-of-Life Care
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) has emerged as a promising approach for individuals at the end of life, offering several potential benefits.
- Rapid reduction of depression and anxiety: Ketamine is known for its fast-acting effects in alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety. This can be particularly beneficial for terminally ill patients who need immediate relief from emotional distress.
- Pain Management: Ketamine has strong analgesic properties and can help manage chronic pain that is often associated with terminal illnesses. This can improve the patient’s comfort and quality of life.
- Enhanced emotional and psychological well-being: Ketamine can induce altered states of consciousness that allow patients to explore their emotions and thoughts more deeply. This can lead to emotional breakthroughs, helping them come to terms with their condition and find peace.
- Reduction of existential distress: Patients facing the end of life often experience existential distress and fear of death. Ketamine-assisted therapy can help reduce these feelings by providing experiences of unity, interconnectedness, and transcendence, which can be profoundly comforting.
- Improved quality of life: By alleviating emotional and physical pain, ketamine-assisted therapy can improve overall quality of life, allowing patients to engage more fully with their loved ones and enjoy their remaining time.
- Facilitating acceptance: Ketamine can help patients reach a state of acceptance regarding their mortality, providing them with a sense of closure and reducing the emotional burden on themselves and their families.
As part of a comprehensive palliative care plan that addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of patients at Amy’s Mind Lab, using KAP around end of life is some of the most important work we do.
